New Term, New Books!

Well it's September, still plenty of sunshine and lots of new books from Firefly Press to enjoy as you start getting back into school and work.

This month we have two new titles in our Dragonfly series of fun reading for 7-10 year olds.

First up is Mr Mahli's Shed and a ghost named Dylan by primary school teacher Laura Sheldon, illustrated by Huw Aaron. The gentlest of introductions to Dylan Thomas, this is a Swansea-based story about two nine-year-olds who happen to meet a rather grumpy ghost in their neighbour's shed near Cwmdonkin Drive. All goes well until the ghostly Dylan persuades his new friends to take him to school, where mayhem breaks out in a poetry lesson...

Out now in print and ebook, Mr Mahli's Shed (£5.99pb) will also have linked teacher/parent resources on our website when it launches alongside Literature Wales' Developing Dylan 100 workshopshttp://www.developingdylan100.co.uk/ on September 17 at Sully Primary School's very own writers' shed. Guided reading notes will also be available, price £1 or free with a teacher's pack of six books at a special reduced rate of £25. Email us at fireflypress.co.uk for details or telephone 02920 218611.

Hot on its heels comes Pete and the Five-A-Side Vampires (£4.99) by award-winning author Malachy Doyle - fantastic tales of night-time adventuring in darkest Llani, with Pete and his faithful basset hound Blob. Read along as the intrepid duo stumble across a Van-load of Vampires, a Herd of Horrible Hell Hounds, a Bangity Banging Bwca and end up at the most frightful fancy dress party in history! The book is wonderfully illustrated for the first time by Malachy's daughter Hannah Doyle.

And for 8 to 12 year olds we are very proud to publish The Shiver Stone, seaside adventure by Sharon Tregenza. Carys has a mystery to solve, a dog to look after and her father's new girlfriend to ignore. Risking the dangers of the sea and cliffs around her home town, watched over by the Shiver Stone, Carys and her friend Jago must face their greatest fears in this action-packed story. Sharon's first book won the Kelpie Prize and was longlisted for the Branford Boase prize - The Shiver Stone is her second.

If you're out and about in West Wales, don't miss the chance to see Dan Anthony talk about his Dragonfly book Steve's Dreams, Steve and the Sabretooth Tiger, at the Penfro Book Festival at 2pm on September 14 in the Summer House, Rhosygilwen http://penfrobookfestival.org.uk/. There'll also be the chance to buy all our Firefly titles at the festival.

Next month will bring two more Dragonfly titles: Dottie Blanket and the Hilltop by Wendy Meddour, illustrated by Mina May, and Firefly Children's Book Prize winner 2014, Sarah Todd Taylor with Arthur and Me. More on these very soon!
